Reconstruction of Smila CHP with Switch to Use the Biomass as a Fuel

The goal of this project is to produce a carbon neutral energy strategy at Smila CHP plant in Ukraine through the utilization of wood chips instead of natural gas as a fuel. According to the project design document, high-pressure steam is supplied to the turbo generators of 6MW capacity each. The surplus of thermal power and hot water is distributed through a district heating system to the residential sector, at various social and industrial entities of the town of Smila. Electrical energy generated in the project is supplied to the national electricity grid. It will displace the electricity generated by fossil fuel technologies in the national electricity grid. Reconstruction of the originally natural gas-fired plant by switching to a renewable fuel source will significantly reduce emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
