The goal of the project at CJSC “Donetsksteel” – metallurgical plant”, which is recognized by English Lloyd’s Register as a steel and semi-finished steel manufacturer, is to reduce GHG by using modern technologies in the iron and steel production processes. It was envisaged to implement two energy efficiency sub-projects:
1. Implementation of Pulverized Coal Injection (PCI) for Blast Furnace 1 (BF 1); As a result of implementation of this measure, a significant decrease in coke is needed for pig iron production is expected due to an injection of pulverized coal into the furnace (estimated reduction is about 30%).
2. Implementation of an automatic process control system (APCS) for Open Hearth Furnaces (OHF). As a result of the implementation of this measure, a significant decrease in fuel, electricity and other resources is expected due an optimization of technological processes and an elimination of manual labor.
The implementation of these two measures, which were finished in 2007 and 2006, correspondingly are unique projects, which have no other examples in Ukraine.
