Modernization of heat and power plant-steam-airblast station to increase power generation by utilization of blast furnace gas at CJSC ‘Donetsksteel’ – metallurgical plant

The goal of the project at CJSC “Donetsksteel” – metallurgical plant”, which is recognized by English Lloyd’s Register as a steel and semi-finished steel manufacturer, is to reduce GHG emissions and other negative environmental impacts by modernizing the combined heat and power generation-steam-air blast station (CHP-SAS). The proposed JI project activity includes the following key actions, which took place during 2004-2006:

  1. Modernization of high pressure boiler #5 to ensure combustion of increased volume of available BFG;
  2. Reconstruction of turbine generator unit TG#1 to reduce its specific energy consumption.

The implementation of the activities listed above resulted in a bigger share of BFG in the fuel mix consumed for electricity generation, and an increase in the utilization of the power generation capacity, and a decrease in specific energy consumption for power generation.
