Switch from Wet-to-dry Process at Podilsky Cement, Ukraine

This 140 million Euro project, which constitutes the largest single investment in the Ukrainian cement industry since 1991, will decrease the emissions of fossil fuel combustion by changing the technology of cement production from a wet to a dry production process. In the case of a conventional dry cement production technology, water is not added in the preparation of the mixture of raw materials. Therefore, water evaporation from the raw meal is not required. This significantly reduces the level of energy consumption of a dry cement kiln compared to a wet kiln and therefore reduces the CO2 emissions from fuel combustion. The expected energy consumption of the dry cement production system at Podilsky Cement will be approximately 3,180 MJ per tonne of clinker produced (760 kcal/kg). This constitutes a reduction of 53% in energy consumption.
