JI Project cycle
If an investment project leads to a reduction in greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as CO2 or methane, the project can generate project-based emissions reductions. These emissions reductions, called Emissions Reductions Units (ERUs), can be used for compliance purpose in the first Kyoto commitment period from 2008 – 2012. The implementation of JI projects follows certain steps and regulations defined by the Kyoto Protocol. Global Carbon implements for its clients all these steps necessary to realize a JI project.
In the scheme bellow the sequence of these steps is given:

Initial estimation of the compliance of the project as a GHGs reductions project. | |

Issuing of an initial endorsement of the project by the respective government. | ||
Preparation of the technical documentation, which describes the amount of the GHG that will be reduced and proves the additionality. | ||
| Determination of the status of the project as a JI project by an Accredited Independent Entity (Determinator) under the United Nations. | ||
The respective government approves through a LoA to transfer ERUs generated by the JI project. | ||
| Signing of a contract between the JI project owner (seller) and the buyer that will purchase the ERUs generated by the project. | ||
| Giving an official registration of the JI project by the United Nations by its affiliated Joint Implementation Supervisory Committee. | ||
| Annual transfer of the generated ERUs from the seller to the buyer. |

The JI project is not finalized as soon as the project has been approved and been registered at the United Nations. This is just the beginning. Monitoring, Verification, and Transfer of the Emissions Reductions are crucial processes happening several years after the project approval. Until the last transfer of the ERUs generated in 2012, GC will support you to complete your obligations towards the buyer.
In order to be completely successful in your JI projects you need to manage both the development of the projects and the selling of the emissions reductions. Both activities are closely linked to each other as a proper developed JI project will get a higher price on the market.
