Energy Efficiency measures at DEMZ, Ukraine 2006

Electric arc furnace at ISTIL

This JI project takes place at DEMZ, formally known as ISTIL, in Donetsk and it is the first Ukrainian JI project in the metallurgical industry.

DEMZ is a modern mini steel mill in Ukraine, operating electric arc furnaces, continuous casting machine sand blooming mills. The company produces quality steel products, such as rolled and cast billets and special quality bars that are sold to rolling mills, seamless pipe manufacturers, engineering plants and distributors worldwide.

The main goal of this JI project is to reduce energy consumption at the DEMZ plant and environmental pollution from the plant situated in the centre of Donetsk city.

The project envisages three interventions to the production scheme of DEMZ:

1) New transformer for the Electric Arc Furnace 2 and Ladle Furnace;
2) New steam generator;
3) Soaking pits control system.

Emission Reductions

Global Carbon BV has developed the Project Design Document of the project and the project was approved by Ukraine and The Netherlands. Global Carbon BV will also perform monitoring and verification services on this energy efficiency JI project and will be responsible for brokerage of generated ERUs.

A total of 204,210 tonnes CO2 will be reduced until the year 2012.
