Electric arc furnace at ISTIL

This JI project takes place at the CJSC Mini Steel Mill ISTIL in Donetsk and it is the first Ukrainian JI project in the metallurgical industry. Global Carbon has developed the Project Design Document of the project and it was approved by Ukraine. The Company GC will also realize monitoring and verification service on an energy efficiency JI project services with CJSC Mini Steel Mill ISTIL and will be responsible for brokerage of generated ERUs.

ISTIL is a modern mini steel mill in Ukraine, operating electric arc furnace, continuous casting machine and blooming mill. The company produces quality steel products, such as rolled and cast billets and special quality bars that are sold to rolling mills, seamless pipe manufacturers, engineering plants and distributors worldwide.


The main goal of this JI project is to reduce energy consumption at the ISTIL plant and environmental pollution from the plant situated in the centre of Donetsk city. The project envisages three interventions to the production scheme of ISTIL:

1) New transformer for the Electric Arc Furnace 2 and Ladle Furnace;
2) New steam generator;
3) Soaking pits control system.

Emission Reductions

A total of 207,763 tonnes CO2 will be reduced until the year 2012.
