Energy generation at Horlivka coke plant, Ukraine 2008

The Horlivka Coke Plant (HCP), owned by ISTEK LLC, is one of the oldest coke plants in Ukraine. It was put into operation in 1928 with two coke batteries.

The JI project envisages a new steam boiler which will be able to generate 85 tonnes of steam per hour, and a new steam turbo generator will have a capacity of 12.5 MWe. The Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant will be fuelled by Coke Oven Gas (COG), previously used in the existing boiler house with the excess being flared. The existing boiler house will be switched to stand-by mode and used during periods with the CHP is switched off from maintenance.

The JI project is expected to be commissioned during 2010.

Emission Reductions

Global Carbon BV is managing the full Kyoto cycle for a project to install a new steam boiler and turbo generator. The total expected emissions reductions are around 175,000 tonnes of CO2e.
