Coal mine named after A.F. Zasyadko, Ukraine 2006

This JI project takes place at the “Coal mine named after A.F. Zasyadko”. Global Carbon developed the JI project and is assisting in the sales of the emissions reductions. This is the first Ukrainian JI project in the coal mine sector, the project is also the biggest JI project in Ukraine in terms of generated emissions reductions, and the biggest Coal Mine Methane utilization project in Central and Eastern Europe.

General view of the mine named after A.F. ZasyadkoThe mine consists of four sites being the Vostochnaya, Yakovlevskaya, Grigoryevskaya, and Centralnaya production sites of the coal mine. The project’s measures will influence energy flows and emissions at all four sites plus the nearby municipal boilers. The coal mine is located in the city of  Donetsk.

To reduce methane emissions and use opportunities provided by the Joint Implementation mechanism, the Mine started this coal mine methane utilization project in 2003. The project foresees construction of 24 combined heat and power (CHP) generation modules and five gas filling stations.

View of combined heat and power generatorsCogeneration plants

The core activity of this project is the installation of two CHP plants that will consist of 12 CHP generation modules each. The location of the CHP plants is the Vostochnaya and Yakovlevskaya production site. Each cogeneration modules, supplied by GE Jenbacher, has an installed capacity of 3,035 MWel totalling to a power capacity of 72,84 MW. The thermal capacity amounts to 2,63 Gcal/h per CHP module.

The electricity will be supplied to the mine and surplus electricity will be supplied to the Donetsk regional grid. The generated heat will be used to replace heat-only boilers at the mine and the surplus heat will be delivered to the Donetsk district heating system.

Gas filling stations

Five gas filling stations will be constructed to supply CMM to the vehicle of the mine. The CMM will replace diesel, currently used by the vehicles.

Emission Reductions

The project will reduce approximately 7,350,045 tonnes CO2e in the period 2004 – 2012 of which 1,460,517 tonnes has already been monitored and verified in the period 2004 – 2007.

JI Project Status

This CMM utilization project is the largest operational project in JI and is the first project that was approved by Ukraine. It was approved and received final determination under the Joint Implementation Supervisory Committee of the UNFCCC on 25 August 2008. The Project Design Document of Zasyadko CMM JI project could be found at the JI UNFCCC website here.
